Today we will be taking a look at the LPG sector in the Oil and Gas Industry but before we begin it would be better to assume that some of our esteemed readers might be new to this word so we will start by defining the word LPG.

What is LPG?

The word LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas; it is a mixture of hydrocarbon gasses which is used to power heating appliance and also power automobiles.

LPG is commonly kwon as cooking gas and it is an household product that is used to power equipment such as stoves and lighting appliances such as lamps.

There are two main players in the gas sector which are the Gas depots and the marketers, in Nigeria for instance there are 4 gas depots which include:

1.     Petroleum Price Marketing Company (PPMC) in Apapa, Lagos

2.     Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO) in Apapa, Lagos

3.     NAVGAS which is formally NIDO Gas, in Apapa, Lagos

4.     Warri Refinery, in Delta State

The process begins with the nomination of trucks by the Sales and Dispatch department to the account department for authorization, after authorization the truck will be checked with a safety checklist by a safety personnel to make sure it meets safety requirement.

After meeting safety requirements the truck comes in and weigh in after which the Sales and Dispatch Department will issue a filling advice note and a proximity card to the loaders, there are three loading bays with two loading arms each and two trained personnel in each bay.

On arrival at the loading gantry the loader connects the earthen cable which discharges electro static energy from the truck, wedges are put on the tyres to make sure it does not move while loading and the loading arms are connected i.e the liquid and vapour arms and line up of the values are done.

At the tank farm there are three spheres ( Tanks ) each with a capacity of 1500MT each, each with automated values known as ROV’s, after connection of the loading arms are completed the tank farm operator will call the control room to open the ROV of the tank to be used for loading i.e Liquid discharge,  Vapour and Receipt values.
